If you're a DIY'er and you're looking to buy a paint sprayer to paint your home? We're going. to look at all the pro's and con's with paint spraying and let you know all the facts before purchasing your first paint sprayer.

Paint spraying a room all white

Paint Spraying Pro's

First of all let's look at the pro's, as when you get it right, a paint sprayer will save you a massive amount of time and get a better finish.

  • All white - If you're looking to decorate a room all white (or any single colour) then the paint spraying is a good option. To paint a room might only take 15 minutes (after the masking) whereas a brush and roller could take you half a day.

  • Mist coating - If you have a newly plastered room or extension then paint spraying the mist coat along with the top coats is also a great idea. Do it before the skirting boards and carpets are fitting to reduce masking time.

  • Woodwork - Did you know you can use a paint sprayer on your woodwork? Sometimes hare at Pure Perfection Painters, we will only spray the woodwork and brush and roller the rest of the room. Paint spraying skirting boards and doors will leave a better finish than a brush.

  • Hard to reach places - If you have a vaulted ceiling or a difficult to access Hall Stairs and Landing then a paint sprayer is perfect for this. There will be a lot of masking but, everything can be accessed from the floor with an extension pole.

  • Exterior Painting - Painting heavy textured surfaces on the exterior of a home can be difficult. Paint spraying is ideal in this instance and can save time and will save you a lot of energy rather than painstakingly applying the paint with a brush.

Paint Spraying Con's

  • The number one con of paint spraying is by far the masking. You will need to cover every surface which isn't been painted. That's the entire floor , skirting boards, doors, windows, lights, EVERYTHING!! Paint spraying is 95% masking and 5% painting.

  • Coloured walls - if you're thinking of painting a room with a white ceiling and colour walls then paint spraying might not be the best solution. It can be done but you will have to mask up the ceiling and hope the tape does not remove your freshly painted ceiling paint. At Pure Perfection Painters we will avoid using a paint sprayer and result to brush and roller.

  • Cost - if you have one room to paint is the cost of a paint sprayer and all the masking worth it? A paint sprayer will cost anywhere from £100 to £1500 and the masking material could be anywhere from £25 to £100 for a room. If you are spending that kind of money then the time saving had better be worth it.

Extra Paint - If you are paint spraying then you will need to water your paint down by around 10% which sounds great as you will use less. Unfortunately that's not the case. Expect to use upto 30% more paint when using a paint sprayer as opposed to traditional brush and rollering.

Conclusion

There is plenty to think about before you purchase a paint sprayer and hopefully we've covered the fundamentals. If you have a large space to paint all in white then a paint sprayer is ideal for you. If you have one room with colour walls then maybe wait until you have something better suited for spraying.
