Looking for a decorator? Things to consider!

The biggest factor you will find when you start looking for a decorator is if the person or company is a full time decorator, or a handyman. This might seem like a trivial decision but it will impact the end result quote significantly. Firstly a decorator will try and improve the room as much as possible before painting. Filling holes and cracks, sanding walls and woodwork as well as having all the best equipment. Compare this to a handyman who might do minor prep work and then be quickly into the process of painting.

Product knowledge and finish

Another key difference is product knowledge. An experienced decorator will usually recommend someone to use a trade paint (if they don't supply the paint in with the price), whereas a handyman or un-experienced decorator will leave this to a customer and use whatever is in front of them. But why would a decorator insist on using a trade paint? The reason is that a trade paint will leave a better finish and make the process quicker and easier. A trade paint will cover in two coats for instance whereas a paint you can buy from a DIY store may take 3 coats. If you're paying to get a room decorated, then an extra £10 - £20 spent on the better paint is money well spent in our opinion. It could also work out cheaper in the long run due to less labour.

How much will a decorator cost to paint your home?

The question we all want to know is how much are they going to be charged to paint their home? Here are some things to consider. We're going to look at prices in the midlands UK as that will be cheaper than the south but more expensive than the north, so a good medium. We will also look at average prices along with things which can affect the price.

Firstly a basic room like a medium to large bedroom or smaller living. For a decorator to paint the ceiling and walls only you could be expecting to pay around £300-£350 including paint. If you add skirting boards and 2 doors and window sills, this could be around £500-£600 again including paint.

A small bathroom for ceiling and walls would be around £175-£225 and including doors around £275-£325.

A popular request for a decorator is to paint a hall, stairs and landing. Prices on this vary quite widely, as no two are the same. For a simple walls and ceiling you'll be looking around £750+ whereas ceiling / walls / skirting / 9 doors / balustrade could be £1350+.
